How to turn your Android into a dumb phone (without buying one)

Dumb phones are having a moment. People want a phone that calls, texts and gets them home, without the endless feed.

The problem: a real dumb phone also loses WhatsApp, maps, ride apps, banking and your camera. For most people that's too much.

The good news is you can get most of the calm of a dumb phone on the Android you already have. Here are the options, from lightest to strongest.

Level 1: Free settings already on your phone

Most Android phones have Digital Wellbeing (on Samsung: Digital Wellbeing and parental controls). Exact menu names vary by phone, but you'll usually find:

  • App timers: set a daily limit for Instagram, TikTok or YouTube. When time is up, the app icon greys out until midnight.
  • Bedtime mode: turns the screen grey and silences notifications at night.
  • Focus mode: pauses chosen apps while you work.

Try grayscale

A grey screen makes feeds much less tempting. In one study, college students who switched their phones to grayscale cut their screen time by about 39 minutes a day on average.

(University of Cincinnati, on research by Alex Holte)

On most Androids: Settings → Accessibility → Colour and motion (or Visibility enhancements) → Colour correction → Grayscale. Some phones offer it in Digital Wellbeing's Bedtime mode instead.

The catch: all of these can be switched off in two taps. That's fine on a good day and useless on a bad one.

Level 2: Remove the apps

Uninstall the feed apps. Seriously. If you need Instagram for work, use it on a computer at set times.

The catch: feeds also live in the browser. Many people delete the app and then just scroll the website instead.

Level 3: A simple home screen

A minimal launcher replaces your home screen with a short text list of apps: Phone, Messages, Maps, Camera. No colourful icons, no badges. Out of sight really is out of mind.

The catch: the apps are still one search away.

Level 4: A real blocker

If levels 1–3 haven't stuck, you need something that blocks the feeds completely, covers the browser too, and is hard to undo on impulse.

That's what we built Umer OS to do:

  • Blocks Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube, X, Reddit, games, other browsers and adult sites.
  • Keeps calls, WhatsApp, maps, ride apps, banking, email and the camera.
  • Adds a calm home screen with your to-do list and a step counter.
  • Turning it off needs your password, a 24-hour wait or a small fee, so it holds in weak moments.

Which level is right for you?

  • You just want to cut down a bit: Level 1, with grayscale.
  • You keep beating the timers: Level 2 plus 3.
  • You've tried everything and still scroll for hours: Level 4.
