What is brain rot? Signs, science and how to fix it
You watch an hour of short videos and can't remember a single one. Reading a page of a book feels like hard work. Your mind feels foggy and jumpy. People have a name for this now: brain rot.
Where the word comes from
Oxford University Press made "brain rot" its 2024 word of the year. It defines it as the supposed deterioration of a person's mental or intellectual state, especially from consuming too much trivial or unchallenging content online. Use of the term rose by 230% between 2023 and 2024.
The phrase isn't new. Its first recorded use is in Henry David Thoreau's Walden, in 1854.
Is brain rot real?
"Brain rot" isn't a medical diagnosis, and your brain isn't literally rotting. But research does point to real effects from endless, fast content:
- Shorter attention. Psychologist Gloria Mark has measured how long people stay on one screen before switching. It averaged about 2.5 minutes in 2004, and about 47 seconds in studies from 2016–2020. After an interruption, getting fully back on task can take almost half an hour. (University of California, 2024)
- Worse memory for plans. In a lab study, the TikTok-style short-video feed was the only activity that hurt people's ability to remember what they'd planned to do next. (Chiossi et al., 2023)
- Mood. Students who cut social media to 30 minutes a day for three weeks felt less lonely and less depressed. (Hunt et al., 2018)
So "brain rot" is a joke word for something real: a mind trained to expect a new hit every few seconds.
Common signs
- You can't watch a film or read without reaching for your phone.
- You open apps without deciding to.
- Hours disappear and you can't say what you watched.
- Boredom feels unbearable, even for a minute.
- Your sleep slips because "one more video" happens every night.
6 ways to fix brain rot
- Remove the feed, not the phone. The problem is endless short content, not calls or maps. Delete or block TikTok, Reels and Shorts first.
- Make boredom normal again. Walk, queue or commute without audio once a day. Boredom is where your own ideas show up. (Why boredom is good for you)
- Read something long every day. Ten pages of a book retrains your attention to stay on one thing.
- Work in focus blocks. 45 to 90 minutes, phone in another room. (Does your phone hurt your focus?)
- Protect the last hour before sleep. Charge the phone outside the bedroom. (Phones and sleep)
- Give it two weeks. The restless, itchy feeling is strongest in the first days and fades as the habit loosens.
Make it stick
If you've deleted the apps before and they always come back, take the choice away. Umer OS turns your Android into a simple phone: short videos, feeds and games are blocked, while WhatsApp, calls, maps and banking keep working. Turning it off takes your password or a 24-hour wait.
