How to be more productive: start with your phone
Most productivity advice is about apps, planners and morning routines. But for most people the biggest problem is simpler: the phone keeps breaking your focus.
Your attention is being cut into pieces
Psychologist Gloria Mark has spent two decades measuring how long people stay on one screen before switching. In 2004 the average was about 2.5 minutes. In studies from 2016–2020 it was about 47 seconds. And after an interruption, getting fully back to what you were doing can take almost half an hour.
(University of California, 2024)
Interruptions also cost more than time. In one experiment, people who were interrupted made up for it by working faster, and paid with more stress, frustration and time pressure.
(Mark, Gudith & Klocke, CHI, 2008)
7 habits that actually help
- Do your most important task first, before opening any messages.
- Work in blocks of 45 or 90 minutes, then take a real break away from screens.
- Put the phone in another room during focus blocks. It costs nothing, and you can't check what you can't reach. (More on phones and focus)
- Batch your messages. Check WhatsApp and email at set times, for example 11:00, 14:00 and 17:00.
- Turn off all non-human notifications. Apps don't need to tap you on the shoulder. People who need you can call.
- Use if-then plans: "If it's 9:00, then I open the report." Specific plans make follow-through much more likely. (Gollwitzer, 1999)
- Protect your sleep. Tired brains are distracted brains. (Phones and sleep)
Systems beat motivation
You won't feel motivated every day, and you don't need to. The people who seem most disciplined mostly arrange their surroundings so that temptation doesn't show up in the first place.
(Duckworth, Gendler & Gross, 2016)
For most of us that means one thing: make the feeds disappear during the day.
A phone that helps you focus
Umer OS does that on Android. It blocks social media, short videos and games, keeps your useful apps, and adds a Focus mode for 45- or 90-minute blocks and a home screen with today's to-do list. Turning it off takes your password or a 24-hour wait.
